Program Description

Living Latin at Columbia University is a three-day Living Latin event for professors, teachers, and students of classics at all levels. Participants will learn about the status of Latin as a language of communication from antiquity to the present day through a combination of lecture and seminar-style conversations with keynote speaker Professor Jürgen Leonhardt, author of Latin: Story of a World Language, and Justin Slocum Bailey, pedagogy expert and founder of Indwelling Language

Keynote Lecture, "Latin: Story of a World Language" by Prof. Jürgen Leonhardt

Professor Leonhardt of the University of Tübingen will kick off the weekend on Thursday with his first lecture in America since the English publication in 2013 of his book Latin: Story of a World Language. Latin Pedagogy Workshop

On Saturday, Justin Slocum Bailey will offer a pedagogy workshop, focusing on spoken language and research-informed second-language acquisition methods. The workshop will include small break-out sessions for hands-on practice.  For more information, visit the event's page.

Paideia Institute Barbecue

On Saturday afternoon, participants are invited to a barbecue hosted by the Cohen family. Details on this event will be provided after registration. The barbecue will include a mensa latina.

About the Speakers  

Jürgen Leonhardt, is a Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Tübingen in Germany. His book, Latin: Story of A World Language, offers an engaging social history of the Latin language from antiquity to the present day and, drawing parallels between Latin, numerous ancient languages, and English in the modern era, explores the processes through which a spoken language develops into a codified "world language." 

Justin Slocum Bailey is a pedagogy expert and founder of Indwelling Language. Over the course of 25 years as a language learner and teacher, he has consulted with numerous schools and organizations to provide training and mentorship to language teachers and learners. He specializes in active Latin and second-language acquisition theory and methods.

To register for one or all events, fill out this online form. The colloquium and barbecue are free of charge to all registered participants. The cost of the workshop is $50/person and includes lunch.
