Grants for Latin Summer Camps

The Teaching Literacy with Latin summer grant supports high school students who want to organize a short summer Latin camp in their community or online using the Aequora curriculum.

TLwL summer sites are centered around fun and engaging lessons introducing children to the language and culture of the ancient Roman world. Like our school-year program, TLwL summer sites are best suited for elementary and middle school students. Classics summer camps may be created at local libraries and community centers, run in school summer programs, or even hosted online with our Aequora digital resources.

Grantees will be responsible for setting up and organizing their TLwL summer camp, and the grant will help them defray the costs of publicity, instructional materials, and refreshments. The grant money can also be used to pay any room rental fees. An example of a budget has been provided below: 

The Paideia Institute will provide grantees with full access to the curriculum and offer training to help them plan their summer lessons.

To apply for a TLwL summer grant, please complete the application below. 10 grants of up to $100 each will be available. Preference will be given to applications that: 

• • Have thought through logistics--clear ideas about how to recruit students, where the camp will be located, and a realistic budget that does not exceed nor fall radically short of $100. If you don't have answers to absolutely all of these questions, that's ok! 
  • Are clearly written and fully completed by the deadline
  • Come from new applicants (if you've applied/won the grant before, we still welcome your application!)
  • Take place in person (if you're planning to host your camp fully or partially online, you can still apply!)

About Our Site and Aequora 

Our Aequora site is located at Empathy School in Bali, Indonesia. It is an international school that provides a wide range of after-school programs and learning opportunities for its students, now including Latin.

Aequora is a K–8 program focused on literacy through Latin. At Empathy School, we chose Aequora because we believe in the value of a classical education and its ability to connect students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Many of our students come from international and digital-nomad families, and the program offers them a meaningful link to the ancient roots of many modern languages and cultures. Through The Paideia Institute’s Aequora curriculum, our volunteers use the power of classical languages to strengthen literacy, deepen cultural understanding, and promote educational equity—while making the ancient Mediterranean world fun, lively, and accessible to all learners.

Led by independent site coordinators, Aequora envisions Classics as an inclusive, diverse, and socially engaged field. Our textbook, Aequora: Teaching Literacy with Latin, introduces the basics of Latin vocabulary and grammar, Roman culture and mythology, and the connections between Latin, English, and Spanish, all through games and activities designed to show students that learning Latin is both meaningful and enjoyable.

How We Teach Aequora 

Our site was founded by Alice Zhang from Beijing, together with two student volunteers from China, Alicia Tu and Elissa Wang, who share a passion for classical languages and cross-cultural education.

Classes are held on weekdays as part of the school’s enrichment. Each session combines storytelling, games, crafts, drama, and interactive discussions to make Latin engaging and accessible for young learners.

Our lessons are organized around themes from ancient Roman life, mythology, and history. Students might compare Roman homes with houses from their own cultures, act out famous myths and historical stories, hold friendly debates about Roman foods, or build simple models such as aqueducts using recycled materials. Through these hands-on activities, students learn basic Latin vocabulary while also developing confidence, creativity, and cultural awareness.

Alicia Tu and Elissa Wang are student volunteers from China who serve as teaching assistants at the site. They support classroom activities, help lead games and crafts, and work closely with younger students to create a positive and engaging learning environment.

The Aequora program is sustained by enthusiastic volunteers all over the country who care about making a difference and want to fight educational inequality through sharing their love of Latin.

How We Teach Aequora

This site is run by one student volunteer, a KISJ high school student teaching Latin to KISJ elementary students. A 30 minute class is held every Tuesday in an elementary classroom on campus. The volunteer and students being part of the same school community, sessions feel comfortable and welcoming, creating an encouraging and approachable environment for younger learners beginning Latin.The Aequora program is sustained by enthusiastic volunteers all over the country who care about making a difference and want to fight educational inequality through sharing their love of Latin. We are always looking for new volunteers!

Practical Information

The conference will take place at Fordham University's Lincoln Center campus in Manhattan and will run from 8:30am - 5:30pm on Saturday, February 14th and 8:30am - 5:45pm on Sunday, February 15th.

On both days, you'll enter Fordham at 113 W 60th St., through the Lowenstein Center entrance, marked in yellow on this map.

CONFERENCE PACKET

LECTURES

The conference features lectures in English, Latin and Ancient Greek on the conference's theme, Otium et Negotium, by speakers from all over the world. Lectures are open to all conference attendees.

BREAKOUT SESSIONS

In addition to the lectures, the conference also features breakout sessions taught by conference speakers and Paideia staff. In small groups formed according to participants’ experience with Latin or Greek, participants will read and discuss set selections from the conference packet under the guidance of an experienced instructor. These sessions are meant to be interactive immersion experiences in Greek or Latin, which are the exclusive languages of instruction. Group information will be posted on this page by February 1st.

SPECIAL BREAKOUT SESSIONS

In addition to the regular breakout sessions, one special session (titled 'Varia' in the packet) will be offered daily. During the special session, participants are allowed to choose from a selection of offerings. Special sessions include reading of Latin and Ancient Greek texts from the conference packet but not covered in the regular sessions, free Latin or Greek conversation, games, and other activities.

A NOTE ON SPEAKING LATIN AND GREEK

In all breakout sessions and in the Latin lectures, the language of instruction will be Latin, and participants are expected to speak only Latin.

The Paideia Institute does not, however, enforce a Latin-only policy at any of its programs. We see this conference as an opportunity for teachers and others interested in Latin and Greek to come together, practice speaking Latin and Ancient Greek (or try it for the first time) in a supportive environment, effectively learn methods to incorporate active Latin into their own classrooms, meet, interact, and network with one another, and have a good time.

To this end, we certainly encourage those who wish to speak Latin during lunch, during coffee hour, or even for the duration of the conference, but speaking in English is also completely fine.

Spoken Ancient Greek

Participants will be scheduled for at least one Ancient Greek breakout session over the course of the weekend. There will also be spoken Ancient Greek options offered in each of the special sessions. Participants who know no Greek will be scheduled for only Latin sessions.

Cancellation Policy 

The last day to cancel one's registration for a full refund is February 7th, 2026. No refunds can be provided after this date. If you need to cancel at the last minute, we will offer you credit for next year’s conference or for another Paideia program.
