Spring 2016 Course Offerings
Telepaideia classes are taught online in small groups. The Spring 2016 semester runs for ten weeks and begins the week of February 21st, with the week of March 20th off. To enroll, please fill out the form linked at the bottom of the page and pay by credit card. Information about Google Hangout technology and instructions on how to join the classes will be emailed one week before the start of the class.
Continuing Education Units (CEU's) are available for Telepaideia courses. Students interested in taking the course for CEU credit should indicate this on their application and will be asked to submit a short (1/2-page) written reflection at the end of the course.
Conversational Latin and Greek
Conversational Latin for Beginners: FULL
Course Description: This Latin conversation class is designed to allow participants to practice speaking Latin as an active language.
Level: This course is intended for beginning Latin speakers who know the basics of Latin grammar.
Textbook: Instructor will provide materials.
Schedule: Section 1 (FULL): Mondays at 8pm EST. Section 2 (FULL): Wednesdays at 8pm EST. Section 3 (FULL): Wednesdays at 7pm EST (FULL).

Intermediate Conversational Latin: Aesop's Fables: FULL
Course Description: Students in this course will read many short fables taken from an early modern Neo-Latin version of Aesop's work. The fables will serve as material and as inspiration for practicing extemporaneous conversation in Latin.
Level: This course is intended for intermediate Latin speakers.
Textbook: Laura Gibbs, Aesop's Fables in Latin. Bolchazy-Caducci, 2009. This textbook is optional. The instructor will provide all necessary materials.

Advanced Conversational Latin: Erasmus' The Praise of Folly: FULL
Course Description: This Latin conversation class is designed to allow participants to practice speaking Latin as an active language. Students will read and discuss the text in Latin.

Advanced Conversational Latin: Ovid's Amores
Course Description: In this course, designed for experienced speakers of Latin, we shall read and discuss selections from Ovid's Amores, including the entirety of book I. Students will spend session reading passages aloud and explaining them in simpler Latin. We will also spend time discussing the themes and context of Ovid's poetry.
Level: This course is intended for experienced Latin speakers.

Intensive Latin and Greek
These intensive Latin and Greek courses are offered for complete beginners. They cover all of Latin and Greek grammar in ten weeks, and prepare students to read texts at an intermediate level. TelePaideia intensive courses use both traditional presentation of Latin and Greek grammar in English and spoken Latin and Ancient Greek teaching techniques.
Intensive Greek
Course Description: This course is an intensive introduction to the Ancient Greek language.
Level: This course is intended for beginners.
Textbook: Learn to Read Greek Parts 1&2 (and their accompanying workbooks) by Keller and Russell.

Intermediate Greek Reading: Lucian's True Histories: FULL
Course Description: This course is open to all with basic knowledge of Greek grammar, though it has been designed with former Intensive Greek students in mind. During the course, students will read Lucian's True Histories with vocabulary and grammar review.
Level: This course is intended for those with basic familiarity with Greek.

Latin Pedagogy
Living Latin Pedagogy: FULL
Course Description: This course, taught by Justin Slocum Bailey of Indwelling Language, is dedicated to helping teachers of Latin develop and improve their pedagogy. Informed by contemporary research and practice in second language acquisition and instruction, the course gives participants exposure to and guided practice in a range of techniques for helping students "think in Latin" and improve their ability to read -- not just translate -- Latin as Latin. Though many of the techniques exploit the benefits of hearing and speaking Latin, no prior experience speaking Latin is required, and all techniques support the ultimate goal of reading Latin texts with joy and success.

DE INSTITUTIONE PUERORUM: A SURVEY OF LATIN LITERATURE ABOUT TEACHING LATIN
Course Description: Students will read and discuss excerpts from a range of authors and eras regarding teaching and, in particular, teaching Latin. Excerpts will come from noted thinkers like Quintilian, St. Augustine, Lorenzo Valla, Leonardo Bruni, Pope Pius II, Battista Guarino, Erasmus, Melanchthon, and Comenius, and will be designed to foster reflection and discussion about the various purposes and philosophies behind Latin education throughout western history. Sessions will include opportunities to relate the ideas presented in the texts to modern methods and perspectives on teaching Latin in the 21st century.

Modern Greek Reading Course: Ancient Greece in Modern Greek Poetry
Course Description: Poetry read in this course will be sampled from Constantine Cavafy, George Seferis, and Odysseus Elytis, three renowned Greek poets who were inspired by Greek history and myth. Discussion (in English) will center on how classical antiquity is reflected and interpreted.
