Aequora in San Diego

Aequora in San Diego

About Our Site and Aequora

We are proud to introduce a new site on the West Coast - in San Diego, California. Our program currently partners with two schools: Grace Academy, a multilingual after-school program in the North County area, and Deer Canyon Elementary School's ESS after-school program. Neither of these schools has an established Latin or classics curriculum, and our goal is to bridge this gap for 3rd through 5th grade students. Looking ahead, we are excited to expand into additional elementary schools across the Poway Unified School District to provide even more students access to classical studies.

Aequora is an initiative of the Paideia Institute, designed to foster English literacy and cultural curiosity through the engaging lens of Latin language, Roman culture, and mythology. By introducing children to the roots of language and classical civilization, our program hopes to inspire a lifelong love of learning and broaden educational opportunities for all.

How We Teach Aequora

Our site meets once a week, offering lively, interactive sessions led by passionate student volunteers from The Cambridge School—all with years of Latin education experience and Del Norte High School - students with strong passion in classics. Through games, group activities, storytelling, and hands-on projects, we make Latin and the world of the Romans come alive for young learners, regardless of their previous language background.

Aequora’s approach encourages everyone to participate and succeed, and volunteers work together to create a fun, team-based learning environment. By drawing connections between Latin, English, and other world languages, our students gain both practical literacy skills and an appreciation for the diversity and richness of the classical tradition.
