Living Latin in New York City

Living Latin in New York City

Program Description

Living Latin in New York City is a two-day Living Latin and Ancient Greek conference in Manhattan. The conference is designed to allow teachers and students of Latin and Ancient Greek to explore and practice the active use of the ancient languages in a classroom setting. Held in historic Fordham University’s Lincoln Center Campus in Manhattan, the program includes lectures in Latin, Ancient Greek and English on the conference theme and smaller sessions in which participants practice speaking Latin and Ancient Greek themselves. Daily coffee hours allow for informal contact and exchange with other participants.

Theme

The theme for the 2027 conference is Pax et Bellum.

How do Greek and Latin texts throughout history conceptualize war and peace, and how were these states celebrated, mourned, justified, or condemned? What counts as a just cause for war, and who is expected to fight? What are the moral and political dimensions of conflict and its resolution, and how do they shape identity, virtue, or power?

We’re currently accepting abstracts for talk proposals. You can submit an abstract for consideration on the LLiNYC 2027 Call for Papers page.

Location

LLiNYC 2027 will be held at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus in Manhattan, located at 113 W 60th Street, New York, NY 10023.

“Living Latin in New York City is always an incredible experience! This was my third year attending, and the first year I brought my high school students along with me. I have found that every year my speaking and comprehension improves! The lectures were engaging and informative, the breakout sessions provided the medium for communicating in Latin, and as always Latin Karaoke was a blast! My students discovered that it is not too hard to communicate using Latin, and even to hold full conversations tantum Latine!” — Clare Young

“The Paideia Institute is one of those rare places in the world where such an array of expert and novice classicists alike can gather to experience the Latin and Ancient Greek languages in an immersive, spoken environment! Everyone, from expert Latinists to first-year Latin students, is guaranteed to learn something new!” — Austin Sarker-Young

“Attending Living Latin in NYC was a wonderful, welcoming, and enriching experience! An excellent opportunity for classical language experts and enthusiasts alike.” — Jessica Richardi

“I had never taken part in a Latin language event as an autodidact. Living Latin in New York was an excellent introduction to the wider Latin and Ancient Greek community. I got to meet excellent instructors and fellow attendants and had an experience I will never forget.” — Joshua Lopez

“My favorite part of the conference were the break-out sessions, which allow participants to experience spoken Latin interactively, in the immersive format. It was so inspirational to see my students' faces light up as they suddenly realized that, though they've never done this before, they are capable of understanding and even responding to the instructor in Latin — the language came alive for them. As one of my students put it, he felt his brain literally transforming over the course of the weekend!” — Asya Sigelman
