Course Description

Course Description: In this class participants will start at the beginning of Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War and we will get as far as we get. We will discuss grammar and syntax as needed but also pay attention to Thucydides' unique and challenging style, as well as engage in close reading of the text as a masterpiece. This is possibly the instructor's favorite book and he hopes to bring an infectious sense of wonder to the close reading of this Desert Island Book Level: This class is intended for students who have translated at least some authentic Attic prose before, though a high level of experience is not necessary Textbook: Instructor can provide the Greek text, if necessary, but the required text is Cameron's Thucydides Book 1: A Student's Grammatical Commentary
