Catullus, Carmina Minora (Beginner/Intermediate)
Fall 2026
Course Description
Course Description: In this course, we will read a selection of Catullus’ Carmina Minora, also called Polymetra (c. 1–60). These shorter poems can be a good start for those, who have not read Latin poetry yet, and, besides, they contain a lot of useful expressions (and bad words ;-)) we can use in our everyday Latin! Depending on the proficiency of the participants and how much time we will need, we will read 7–10 poems altogether. We will also learn some basics of Latin prosody and the different metres used by Catullus (e.g. hendecasyllable, sapphic stanza, choliambus etc.) in order to be able to recite and memorize some of them! I plan to hold the class principally in Latin, but we will, whenever needed, explain and translate into English, so don’t worry if you are not a proficient speaker! DETAILS Level: Intermediate. You should have a basic or intermediate knowledge of Latin grammar (all conjugations & declinations + principle parts etc.) and some reading experience, but not necessarily of original texts or poetry. Textbook: You can use any text avaiable on the internet, e.g. thelatinlibrary.com Sections capped at: 5 students. If the course is sold-out, please fill out this waiting-list form.
