Summer 2024

Course Description

Course Description: Horace’s Odes are the crowning achievement of Latin lyric poetry: not without reason did Horace ask to be added to the Alexandrian canon of nine Greek lyricists (Or. 1.1.35). These irresistibly quotable poems, once familiar school texts, but now regarded as altogether more slippery and sophisticated productions, treat themes as varied as love, friendship, politics, and mortality with no illusions but also with deep humanity. This course has two aims: (1) to read, appreciate, and share together some of these wonderful poems, both familiar classics and lesser-known gems, and (2) to improve oral Latin abilities and fluency, and in particular to acquire a technical linguistic and literary vocabulary for reading and discussing texts in Latin Level: This course is intended for those with experience speaking Latin Textbook: Instructor will provide materials
