Modern Greek for Classicists

Fall 2025

Course Description

Course Description: Modern Greek can feel both familiar and surprising to classicists: the alphabet and many words are recognizable, yet the sound, rhythm, and everyday use of the language open up a whole new world. This course offers a guided path across that bridge, designed specifically for students with some background in Ancient Greek who want to bring their knowledge into the present. Built on the Paideia Institute’s groundbreaking Modern Greek for Classicists online curriculum, the class combines the clarity of structured grammar modules and graded readings with the energy of live, spoken practice. Instead of just studying forms, you will use them in conversation, role-play, and storytelling, turning passive recognition into active command. By the end of the semester, students will be able to carry on basic conversations in Modern Greek, read accessible texts with confidence, and appreciate more deeply how the ancient and modern languages connect. The emphasis is on steady progress, cultural connection, and the excitement of actually speaking Greek as it is spoken today Level: This course is intended for students with no prior study of Modern Greek, but with at least two semesters of Ancient Greek Textbook: Paideia online curriculum.
