Course Description

Course Description: This course reads Petrarch’s remarkable Posteritati (“Letter to Posterity”), last reworked by the author in 1371 towards the end of his life. In the letter, Petrarch presents himself and his career to the those who will come after him. The letter serves as a fine introduction to Petrarch’s pervasive interest in finding language to describe the self, as well as his highly self-reflective sense of his literary and moral life. In session we read the Latin, render it into English, and discuss in English any topic of interest to the group. In particular, we will reflect on our own relation to Petrarch’s career and influence as the shaper of a particular way of relating to literature, antiquity, and to the self Level: Intermediate-Advanced Latin Reading Textbook: Instructor will provide materials
