Course Description

Course Description: Justinian's reign from 527-565 was a time of immense movement for the Roman Empire. Amazingly, the era produced a major historian, Procopius, who wrote the history of his own times. This Telepaideia course will read his histories of the wars of Justinian, a work of grand historiography in the tradition of Herodotus and Thucydides. The plan is to read the work slowly in Greek in order to hone our Greek skill at the same time as we come to understand better Procopius and his account of his times. Each session we will read his Greek, render it into our own English as best we can, and talk about anything of interest to the group. This term we start at the beginning of the work Level: Intermediate-Advanced Greek Reading Textbook: Instructor will provide materials
