Seneca - Letters
Summer 2023
Course Description
Course Description: Philosophy is the guide of life. Seneca's influence on Western ethics and prose style is only overshadowed by the great Cicero. To be second to Cicero is no small achievement, so let's examine Seneca's advice over the summer and learn from him how to improve not only our style but also our substance, in Latin and in life. The main goal of the course will be an understanding of Seneca's content and style. While this will involve translation into English, it will not be the only way we'll improve our Latin. Translating his thoughts into other Latin words, or light Latin discussion will also help our comprehension of Seneca suīs verbīs Level: You should have Latin grammar more or less mastered. It will also be less onerous if you know the 1000 most common Latin words, since only the more obscure words are glossed Textbook: We'll use the Bolchazy-Carducci version of Seneca's Moral Epistles because it has the greatest selection of letters in a single volume and provides the notes and vocabulary on the facing page.
