The Latin Hymn
Summer 2026
Course Description
The hymn repertory constitutes one of the greatest repositories of lyrical feeling and theological wisdom in the western Christian tradition. This reading course will explore this tradition from its roots in Hilary of Poitiers through its development in the Middle Ages up to the reforms of Urban VIII in the seventeenth century. Special features of this course will be examination of the hymns specific to rites and orders, and we will also give consideration to the classification of hymn metres and the Gregorian musical tradition of the hymn repertoire, making this course suitable not just for readers of Latin but also for church music directors.
