Course Description

Course Description: The sixth-century priest and bishop Venantius Fortunatus is today best known for a few hymns that the Catholic Church still prescribes for use in the liturgy. But Fortunatus also left us with hundreds of other poems, both spiritual and secular, that are intriguing both for their content and their construction and are well worth reading. Fortunatus is also fascinating in that he was a classically trained poet, writing with classical style and meter, yet with a flair for theological imagination and insight that looks forward to the rich Christian poetry of the Middle Ages. In this course we will read a number of poems by Fortunatus and discuss their ideas, style, and theological interest Level: Facility with Latin grammar, syntax, and vocabulary is preferred, though interested students of other levels are welcome Textbook: Instructor will provide materials
