Spring 2025

Course Description

Course Description: Let’s accompany Aeneas and his companions on their flight from the burning Troy and look for their new homeland! It will be an adventure, and we will be facing many dangers … but also some very surprising and beautiful incounters and powerful words! In this course, we will read selected passages from this quite rarely treated Aeneid book. We will exercise to read metrically and talk about metrical particularities, rephrase verses in prose, find synonyms and expand our vocabulary, solve grammar questions and recur, when suitable, to other books of the Aeneid. The course is supposed to have a chilled atmosphere and will be adapted to the needs of you participants. The course language will be Latin, which doesn’t mean that it is forbidden to ask things or translate into other languages, whenever necessary Level: You should have some experience in reading original Latin and an intermediate/upper level in speaking. Or, if you are an advanced reader with good grammar skills, but without speaking experience, you can practice speaking through this course!. Textbook: I suggest the Oxford edition of R.A.B. Mynors with a critical commentary, but any other edition will do it (or just thelatinlibrary.com).
