AN ACTIVE LATIN AND GREEK CONFERENCE

February 17th-18th, 2024

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Living Latin in New York City is a two-day Living Latin conference in Manhattan. The conference is designed to allow teachers and students of Latin to explore and practice the active use of the ancient languages in a classroom setting. Held in historic Regis High School on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the program includes lectures in Latin on the conference theme and smaller sessions in which participants practice speaking Latin themselves. The conference also offers optional spoken Ancient Greek sessions and lectures. Daily coffee hours allow for informal contact and exchange with other participants.

THEME

The theme for the 2024 conference will be announced in the spring.

TESTIMONIALS

"I have never experienced spoken Latin to such an extent. It was both challenging and empowering to apply all the skills which one has acquired throughout the language acquisition process. It was so great to see how easy colloquial expressions can be adopted in Latin for the everyday conversational approach. My classroom has most certainly been revived with a more confidently Latin speaking teacher."

– Friederike Williams, high school teacher

"Having taken years of Latin in college as a Classics undergrad, but being rusty, and not having used it actively in years, I was a little unsure how I'd do at the conference. I needn't have worried. I was made to feel more than welcome and encouragement was provided by all. Learners of all levels and ages were present, which made for a really fruitful weekend, allowing both for speaking with those on my level and for challenging myself with those at a higher one. A really welcoming group. Don't let your level be the reason you turn this opportunity down. I came away with contacts to speak with and am inspired to do so. I can't wait to return next year, with much more practice under my belt. Gratia!"
