The Paideia Institute Greece and Rome Prize

Hello, my name is Greisy Lopez-Serrano, a future senior at Washington Latin Public Charter School in Washington DC. I never thought Latin could be used in modern-day, but after taking Latin classes I was able to learn the similarities between modern languages and ancient ones. I love learning about the myths and legends of any culture. I would be happy to learn to know what tales or stories that could have been told back then. I still struggle with memorizing the grammatical parts of Latin, but that doesn't make it any less fun working on it and putting each piece together to understand a sentence or even a story.

Hello! I’m Anthony, a junior at The Brooklyn Latin School. I would have never thought I would be learning an ancient language in school, let alone traveling across the world to expand my knowledge of it. At first, I really didn’t like Latin. I was very confused with everything, but slowly and surely, I was able to understand it. Now, I see Latin as a fun puzzle, and I feel more confident facing anything Latin! Outside of Latin, I enjoy speaking what’s on my mind, advocating, and very importantly, representing the Latino community at my school.

I'm Karim from Boys Latin High School of Philadelphia. In my very first Latin Class, I was introduced to the history, daily life, mythology, and nuances of the Roman Language and have enjoyed it since. I have always found joy in Latin because it allows me to see language from a different perspective. Additionally, Roman culture has it's own special beauty that drives my studies, so I am really excited to study the stories they've told, with the language they have spoken, on the lands they have walked, upon the monuments they have built.

Salve! My name is Adanna Taylor; I am a graduating senior from the Brooklyn Latin School and an incoming freshman at Princeton University! My first real introduction to learning Latin was in my freshman year of high school. Like most Latin students, I disliked learning the language at first, mainly because I didn’t see the practicality in committing declension endings and nomenclature to heart. However, as I developed my Latin skills and began approaching the language with more intention, I quickly fell in love with Latin. Now I can directly see how my understanding of Latin has helped me in so many larger areas of my life, such as my Spanish-speaking abilities and understanding of the Ancient World. Thank you to the Classics Department at the Brooklyn Latin School and the Paideia Institute for granting me this amazing opportunity!
