"Solitude and Society"

The Paideia Institute is pleased to welcome abstract submissions to the ninth iteration of Living Latin and Greek in New York City. This conference features papers delivered in Latin and Ancient Greek as well as small breakout sessions where participants practice speaking Ancient Greek and Latin under the guidance of expert instructors. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s conference will be held online using Zoom.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Solitude and Society.”  The global pandemic has vastly increased the “social distance” between people. What are the benefits and challenges of time spent alone? How does time spent with others uphold social structures? What can we do to make our solitude and our social interactions more meaningful or more productive?

We invite proposals for short talks in Ancient Greek or Latin on this theme with examples from Ancient Greek and Latin literature or material culture. Outstanding submissions on other topics will also be considered, particularly (but not only) if they focus on classical language pedagogy.

Please use the form below to send in an abstract of no more than 500 words. The deadline for submissions is November 1st, 2020. All talks will be recorded, subtitled, and (with each speaker’s permission) published on Paideia's YouTube channel and in our online magazine, In Medias Res.

Solitudo Et Societas

Omnes qui ad conventum Latinitatis Vivae Novi Eboraci nonum concelebrandum Graecam orationem Latinamve habere velint rogamus ut ad nos epitomen vel breviarium orationis propositae mittant. Orationes oportet ad totius conventus propositum vel argumentum pertineant, quod est solitudo et societas. Huius anni conventus diebus tredecimo et decimo quarto mensis Februarii concelebrabitur.  Pestilentiae causa, conventus interretialiter habebitur.

Pestis mondalis COVID XIX dicta valde distantiam inter homines multiplicavit.  Quid prodest tempus degere soli?  Quid solitudinis piget?  Quomodo commeatus hominum civitates nostras sustinet fulcitque?  Quomodo efficere possumus, ut solitudines necnon coitus nostri valeant et nobis proficiant?

Equidem in propositis orationibus Graece aut Latine habendis de his et similibus rebus per exempla e Graecis Latinisve litteris hausta seu per historica et archaeologica testimonia disseretur. Optimas et praestantissimas orationes quae ad alia argumenta pertinent non recusabimus — praecipue sed non solum cum in eis de arte et ratione linguae Graecae Latinaeve docendae agatur.

Proposita rogamus ut mittatis non prolixiora quam quingentorum vocabulorum Graece sane Latineve scripta ante Kalendas Novembris. Omnia proposita per nexum infra positum transmitti possunt. Orationes omnes pelliculis cinematographics incisae oratore adnuente in situ qui est YouTube in lucem edentur, nec non in ephemeride nostra In Medias Res.

ΕΡΗΜΙΑ ΚΑΙ ΚΟΙΝΩΝΙΑ

Ἡ ἑταιρεία τῆς Παιδείας ἥδιστ’ ἀσπάζεται ὑποθέσεις συγγραφῶν ἐπισταλείσας ὑφ’ ὧντινων ἐθέλουσι μετέχειν τῆς ἐνάτης κατ’ ἔτος διατριβῆς τῆς λεγομένης Λατίνης ἐν Νέῳ Ἐβοράκῳ ζώσης.  οἱ μετέχοντες ῥητόρων μὲν πολλῶν ἀκούσονται λόγους πολλοὺς Ἑλληνιστί τε καὶ Ῥωμαϊστὶ ποιουμένων, διδασκάλων δὲ πολλῶν ἑλληνίζειν τε καὶ ῥωμαΐζειν δεινῶν.

ὑποτίθεμεν οὖν, ὡς κύριον ζήτημα, Ἐρημία καὶ Κοινωνία. Ὁ πανταχοῦ νῦν ἐπιδήμιος  λοιμὸς ὁ COVID ΙΘ΄ λεγόμενος διστήματα μεγάλα μεταξὺ ἀνθρώπων ἐποίησε. Τί δὲ ὂφελος ἐκ τῆς ἐρημίας ἐγγίγνεται; τί τὸ χαλεπόν;  Πῶς ἡ συνουσία ἀνθρώπων τῇ πόλει βοηθεῖ; πῶς νῦν πεπαιδευμένοι τοῖς παροῦσι κακοῖς βελτίους ποιοίμεθ’ ἂν τὰς ἀπὸ τοῦδε ἐρημίας τε καὶ συνουσίας;

ἀποδεχόμεθα μὲν οὖν ἀσπασίως τὰς ὑποθέσεις ὑφ’ ὑμῶν ἅς ἂν προσθέντες τούτῳ τῷ ζητήματι πέμψητε. ἀνάγκη δὲ δὴ Ῥωμαϊστὶ ἢ Ἑλληνιστί γράφειν καὶ λέγειν (δῆλον ὅτι οὐκ ἅμα ἄμφω), παραδείγμασι δὴ χρωμένους Ῥωμαίοις τε καὶ Ἕλλησιν.. ἀποδεχοίμεθα δ’ ἂν μετ’ εὐνοίας καὶ ἄλλας ὑποθέσεις αἳ δοκοῖεν ἡμῖν μέλλειν ἀριστεύσειν καὶ εἰ πάνυ τι καὶ ἑκοῦσαι ἁμάρτοιεν τοῦ κυρίου ἐρωτήματος.

πέμψατ’ οὖν, ὦ πολίται, τὰς ὑποθέσεις (μὴ ὑπερβαλλούσας πολύ τι τὸ μέτρον πεντακοσίων ῥημάτων) δία τὴν ἠλεκτρονικὴν μέθοδον κάτω δηλουμένην πρὸ τῆς πρώτης ἡμέρας τοῦ Νοεμβρίου.  πᾶς λόγος ἀποκατατεθεὶς δημοσίᾳ ὕστερον ἐκκείσεται δι’ ὄψεως καὶ φωνῆς έν Youtube, ἑκόντος γε τοῦ ῥήτορος, καὶ ἐν τῇ ἐφημέριδι In Medias Res.
