Scholarship for Study in Greece
The Paideia Institute is pleased to announce a scholarship dedicated to the memory of Robert Germany. Robert was Associate Professor of Classics at Haverford College, and touched many lives inside and outside the Classics world – with charisma, intelligence, vast learning, and dedication to his craft and friends. His teaching and intellectual interests were wide-ranging, but his scholarship centered around classical theater, especially the study of Roman Comedy as a window onto the ancient thought-world. His first and only monograph before his untimely death, Mimetic Contagion: Art and Artifice in Terence’s Eunuch, was published by Oxford University Press (2016). In the eyes of those whom he influenced, which included Paideia students and staff, Robert was a paradigm of a humane life well lived. He had a rare gift for teaching in a variety of contexts: in courses on ancient culture, in language classes (which he loved teaching), on study-abroad trips around the ancient world, and in everyday interactions. He inspired many to seek a similar intellectual path and creative approach to the world. Robert will be sorely missed for a very long time, as his example continues to inspire us.
