Raphael’s School of Athens is such an iconic image that people often don’t really look at it! But when we do pay it close attention, we find that the fresco itself is philosophical. More than a who’s who of ancient and medieval thought, it provides us with a luminous guide to the best kinds of teaching, learning, and thinking. This lecture will invite its participants to join the great bustling conversation of the School of Athens, tease out some of its Renaissance secrets, and consider what this masterpiece can teach our era of distracted engagement and virtual school.
