Advanced Conversational Latin: Cicero’s De re publica

Advanced Conversational Latin: Cicero’s De re publica

Course Description: According to a letter written to his brother Quintus, Cicero was already working on his De re publica in the spring of 54 BC, a period dominated by the triumvirate of Pompey, Caesar and Crassus. This political work, written in six books, is an imaginary dialog which is set during the Feriae Latinae of the year 129 BC. The text, which is only partly preserved, deals with the question of what the best state and the statesman should be like. In this course, students will read and discuss selected passages from this work in Latin. In addition to the historical and political context, special attention will be paid to the acquisition of new vocabulary.
