Advanced Conversational Latin: Francesco Petrarca’s letters

Advanced Conversational Latin: Francesco Petrarca’s letters

Course Description: Francesco Petrarca (1304–1374) was one of the most important early humanists of the 14th century. He rediscovered Cicero’s letters to Atticus – previously thought lost – and authored numerous works in Latin. Following Cicero’s example, he began collecting his own letters, which he organized into collections, the most significant being Epistolae familiares and Epistolae seniles. In this course, students will read and discuss selected letters (e.g., Ad posteritatem, De ascensu montis Ventosi) in the original language. In addition to the cultural and historical aspects, special attention will be paid to the acquisition of new vocabulary.
