Course Description: Emperor Claudius (r. 41–54 AD), the grandson of both Mark Antony and Livia, was an interesting yet very ambiguous member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Described as mentally and physically impaired by some, and only physically weakened by others, he led the Roman conquest of Britain, wrote scholarly works on the history of the Etruscans and Carthage, and introduced new letters to the Latin alphabet. In his final years, he married his niece, Agrippina the Younger, who later probably poisoned him to secure the succession of her son, Nero (r. 54–68 AD) against Claudius’ own son, Britannicus. One of the most important sources for learning about his life is Suetonius' famous biography. In this course, students will read and discuss this work in the original language. Besides the historical aspect, special attention will be paid to the acquisition of new vocabulary.
