Advanced Conversational Latin: Tacitus’ Dialogus de oratoribus

Advanced Conversational Latin: Tacitus’ Dialogus de oratoribus

Course Description: Tacitus (55–120 AD) is widely regarded as the most important Roman historian of the early principate. However, he also authored a significant treatise in which he explores the decline of rhetoric in the 1st century AD. As in his historical works, Tacitus ultimately investigates how the loss of liberty transforms society. In this course, students will read and discuss selected passages from the Dialogus de oratoribus in the original language. Besides the cultural and historical aspect, special attention will be given to the acquisition of new vocabulary.
