Event Description
Bede's Ecclesiastical History is a foundational document for understanding the history of British Isles, their Christianisation and political life in the period of the Anglo-Saxon domination, written a superb Latinist and a figure of Europe-wide significance in terms of his massive erudition. This course will read selections from across the Historia, including the account of the conversion of Edwin of Northumbria and the vision of Hell experienced by Dryhthelm. A feature of this course will be engagement with and reading from the immense manuscript tradition of this work.
