Cicero's Catilinarian Speeches

Cicero's Catilinarian Speeches

Course Description: Cicero’s four speeches against Catiline are perhaps the most famous speeches of his career, and they mark the defining moment of his consulship in 63 BCE. Catiline, after his loss in the consular elections that year, plotted with several others to overthrow the Roman Republic and install himself as leader. Cicero, however, learns of the conspiracy and obtains definitive proof of Catiline’s involvement. In these speeches, given over a one-month period, Cicero exposes the conspiracy and documents the defeat of the conspirators. In this course we will read all of the first Catilinarian, and selections from the other three.
