Dante Alighieri, Monarchia (Advanced Latin/Italian Reading)

Dante Alighieri, Monarchia (Advanced Latin/Italian Reading)

Course Description: Participants will read the Latin original and both Shaw's facing English translation and Ronconi's facing Italian translation. The purpose of the meetings is to use an advanced level of the Latin or Italian language to reflect together on the contents of the work with a focus on Dante's formal approach to the political theme of the Empire and his method of analysis and reasoning. The secondary intent in reading the work is to see whether it contains modes of intellectual inquiry that are still relevant and indirectly applicable to contemporary issues. We will also draft a written summary of the reflections developed on the contents. Personal contributions and conversation about the text will be in English or Italian or both.
