Course Description: This is a continuation of the previous course on the same text. We'll resume at Chapter 2, Section 4, line 27 ed. Lilla (= 127.15 ed. Suchla): ἦν γὰρ αὐτῶν, ὅπερ ἔφην,..; new students are expected to have read thus far at least in a translation. This course is conducted on Zoom, by enrolling you agree that all the sessions be recorded and posted in the public domain; you may find the recordings of all the previous sessions here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlvrTlip221Od1t2QfPRp_LuXIZKn5Hhg The course is an exercise in slow reading. Students are to read and translate in turn from the original; then follows a detailed analysis of each passage, from the discussion of the nuances of its grammar/syntax to the assessment of its theological force. Also, sometimes we consult the “scholia.” They are the commentaries added to the Dionysian corpus (Corpus Dionysiacum, or CD) at such an earlier stage of its transmission that it would be fair to say that CD (including De divinis nominibus, or DN) never existed in its original Greek within the Church without them. The scholia were traditionally ascribed to Maximus Confessor and are printed in full in Patrologiæ Græcæ (PG) vol. 4.2. In the 20th century, however, it was discovered that a substantial part of them belongs to an earlier author, John of Scythopolis. John’s scholia to DN came out in a critical edition (also by Suchla), available here: https://eclass.upatras.gr/modules/document/file.php/LIT1979/Beate_Regina_Suchla_Ioannis_Scythopolitani_Prologus_Et_Scholia_in_Dionysii_Areopagitae_Librum_de_Divinis_Nominibus_Cum_Additamentis_Interpretum_Aliorum__2011.pdf
