Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite

Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite

Course Description: The Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite relates the love affair between Aphrodite and Anchises and the birth of their son Aeneas, the great Trojan hero and legendary founder of Rome. It is probably the oldest of the hymns, closest in language and style to the Homeric epics, and therefore one of the earliest poetic works of Ancient Greece. This course will lead students through a close reading of the Greek text of the poem with help on grammatical details, stylistic features of hexameter verse, and the literary appreciation of archaic Greek poetry. It will interest those who want to learn to read epic verse in preparation for Homer, or those who have already read some Homer but wish to further explore Greek epic, as well as students of Vergil's Aeneid searching for the literary background to that poem.
