Tuesday., 6pm (U.S. Eastern Time)
Course Description: This class is an introduction to the culture which emerged in the Greek-speaking cities of the ancient Mediterranean. In the course of a few consequential centuries, these people made rapid progress in poetry, sculpture, architecture, politics, philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, and medicine. Students will be given the background to appreciate its outsized impact on human history—on India, Egypt and Rome, on Judaism and Christianity, on the Middle East and the Islamic golden age, and later, following the Renaissance, on the scientific culture of modern Europe and our contemporary globalized world.
