Letters of Pliny: In Search of the Model Roman

Course Description: In this course, we will read eighteen letters of Pliny containing character & biographical sketches of Pliny's illustrious friends and contemporaries: great statesmen, outstanding scholars, poets and philosophers, promising suitors, austere old men, and exemplary mothers, wives, and daughters. From these letters, we can make out what virtues and behaviors comprised—at least according to Pliny!— a model Roman at the end of the first-century C.E.

DETAILS

Level: Students should be acquainted with Latin grammar and have experience reading continuous, unadapted texts. As always, prior experience with Pliny is helpful but not required.

Gabe Kuhl holds a B.A in Classics from Randolph College. He worked with Paideia as a Rome Fellow and later joined the Peace Corps to teach English in North Macedonia. He now lives and works in the Washington D.C metropolitan area.
