PRACTICAL INFORMATION
The conference will run from 9am - 5pm on Saturday Feb. 15th and Sunday Feb 16th, with an optional Cena Latina (not included in the price of registration) on Saturday night at 6:00pm. Registration will open at 8:30am on Saturday morning, with conference events kicking off by 9:30am.
Registration and lectures, and breakout sessions will take place at Regis High School, located at 55 E. 84th St. in Manhattan. Important: Photo ID is required to enter the building.
The optional Cena Latina on Saturday night will take place at the The Green Kitchen located at 1619 2nd Avenue.
The closest public transportation to Regis is the 4/5/6 subway at 86th street and Lexington Avenue or the Q stops at 86th street and 2nd Avenue.
Parking is difficult to find on the street in Manhattan, but there are numerous parking garages near Regis.
HOUSING
The Paideia Institute has reserved a limited block of single rooms at the Seafarer's International House, available to conference participants at a reduced group rate of $75 per night. It is located near Union Square, about a 25 minute subway ride away from Regis. It is a modest guest house with single rooms and shared bathrooms. Please send an email to [email protected] by Friday January 10 if you would like to book a room at the Seafarer's International House. Space is limited and will be allotted on a first-come-first-served basis.
The Courtyard by Marriott Upper East Side, which is about a 20 minute walk from the conference, may also have rooms available.
SESSIONS AND LECTURES
A schedule of conference sessions will be included in the text packet, which will be available to participants about 2 weeks before the conference. The packet will also be distributed in hard copy to each participant at the conference. Participant lists for each section will also be distributed at registration.
Regular Sessions
The conference will include a number of regular and special sessions. During the regular sessions, participants will be divided into groups based upon their experience level. Regular sessions will be led by conference speakers and Paideia staff. The readings for the regular sessions will be indicated on the schedule in the packet.
Special Sessions
During the special sessions (titled 'Varia' in the packet) participants will be able to choose from one of several sessions in Latin and Ancient Greek. These special session will cover the remaining texts included in the packet.
Spoken Ancient Greek
Participants who know ancient Greek will each have the opportunity to attend at least one session over the course of the weekend. There will also be spoken ancient Greek offered in each of the special sessions.
Lectures
The conference will also feature lectures in Latin and Ancient Greek on some aspect of the conference's theme. Multiple lectures will take place at a time, and participants may choose which to attend. All lectures will be filmed and made available to participants via YouTube after the conference.
All lectures and sessions will take place in the classrooms and auditoria at Regis. More precise information on rooms for sessions and lectures will be provided at registration.
FOOD
The conference includes a coffee and bagel breakfast and a coffee hour daily. Lunch is not included, but time will be provided to purchase lunch nearby.
PAIDEIA TABLE
There will be a small Paideia table set up in the main hall where participants can learn more about Paideia's programs and purchase Paideia merchandise and curricular materials.
SPECIAL SESSION ON DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION AT PAIDEIA
The Paideia Institute has recently undertaken many initiatives recently to improve its culture with regard to diversity and inclusion. One of the varia sessions will provide participants an optional opportunity to talk with Paideia Leadership about these initiatives, ask questions, and provide feedback. This session will be conducted in English.
PREPARATION OF TEXTS
The text packet will be made available to participants ahead of the conference. There is no need to prepare texts ahead of time, but if you would like to review the texts we make the texts available before the conference.
A NOTE ON SPEAKING LATIN
In all regular sessions, at the Cena Latina, and for the Latin lectures, the vehicular language will be the lingua Latina.
The Paideia Institute does not, however, enforce a Latin-only policy at any of its programs. We see this conference as an opportunity for Latin teachers and other interested people from the Tri-State area and beyond to come together, practice speaking Latin and ancient Greek (or try it for the first time) in a supportive environment, effectively learn methods to incorporate active Latin into their own classrooms, meet, interact, and network with one another, and have a good time.
To this end, we certainly encourage those who wish to speak Latin during lunch, during coffee hour, or even for the duration of the conference, but speaking in English (or Klingon, or any other language) over lunch or to get to know someone better during coffee hour is completely fine.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CREDIT
The Paideia Institute is an International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) Certified Provider of Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Participants wishing to receive CEU credit will receive a sheet on which to track sessions and lectures attended. Participants must submit this sheet, along with a short paragraph reflecting on the conference and a page-long lesson plan that incorporates active Latin, to [email protected] within a week of the conference to receive credit.
Cancellation Policy and Insurance
The last day to cancel one's registration for a full refund is February 9th, 2020. No refunds can be provided after this date.
The weather in February is unpredictable around the world. If you are traveling to this conference, we suggest you purchase travel insurance to protect your investment in the conference in case you cannot travel to New York due to weather.
