Call For Papers
February 18th-19th, 2023
Festivals and Celebrations
The Paideia Institute is pleased to announce that the tenth iteration of Living Latin and Greek in New York City conference will take place in person in February 2023. The conference will host the roster of speakers scheduled to participate in our postponed 2022 session and will also welcome new abstract submissions. This conference, which features papers delivered in Latin and Ancient Greek as well as small breakout sessions where participants practice speaking Ancient Greek and Latin under the guidance of expert instructors, will be held at The Regis School in New York City on February 18th and 19th, 2023.
The theme of this year’s conference is “Festivals and Celebrations.” The waning of the global pandemic gives cause for celebration. How did people celebrate in the ancient world? What did they sing, or dance, or drink? What brought people together for merrymaking? From saturnalia to bacchanalia, what can we learn about the ancient world from studying how the ancients partied?
We invite proposals for short talks in Ancient Greek or Latin on this theme with examples from Ancient Greek and Latin literature or material culture. Outstanding submissions on other topics will also be considered, particularly (but not only) if they focus on classical language pedagogy.
Please use the link below to send in an abstract of no more than 500 words. The deadline for submissions is September 16, 2022. Travel bursaries are available and can be requested through that same form. We encourage accepted speakers to apply for external funding as well since the number of travel bursaries is limited. All talks will be recorded, subtitled, and (with each speaker’s permission) published on Paideia's YouTube channel and in our online magazine, In Medias Res.
Mores Dies Festos Celebrandi
Nonne iuvat praesertim his diebus, cum pestilentia universali sulci in pulvere ducti sint, antiquos celebrandi rites in memoriam revocare?
Decembres. Omnia proposita per nexum infra positum transmitti possunt. Quamquam omnes oratores hortamur ut viatica aliunde petant, nonnulli tamen oratores electi huiusce sumptibus Instituti Novum Eboracum advolabunt, illic commorabuntur, illinc proficiscentur.
