Course Description: This course provides an introduction to early Babylonian astronomy as well as the Akkadian language and cuneiform script. Students will read through the famous astronomical compendium MUL.APIN (The Plough) in translation with Akkadian transliteration. We will discuss aspects of the language and script and dive into the astronomical concepts recorded on these tablets. With instructor-provided cuneiform tools, we will also look at how these ideas were originally written, copied, and circulated. Students will leave this course with an understanding of how these ancient cultures interpreted the sky as well as basic astronomical vocabulary in English and Akkadian.
