Neo-Latin: Notes on the Muscovites (1549)

Neo-Latin: Notes on the Muscovites (1549)

Course Description: This is a reading course of selected passages from the 1557 ‘Rerum Muscoviticarum Commentarii’ by the Habsburg diplomat Sigismund von Herberstein, who served as Holy Roman Emperor Charles V’s ambassador to the Grand Duchy of Moscow, or Muscovy, from 1517 to 1526. Herberstein was the first Western European writer to provide a detailed, investigative portrait of that country; his work is simultaneously an autobiography of his life in the court of Grand Duke Vasili III, father of Ivan the Terrible, and a Herodotean ethnography, history, and geographical survey of Muscovy and East Slavic civilization.
