Ovid's Medea

Ovid's Medea

Course Description: Medea is one of the most (in)famous and captivating characters of Greek mythology: the witch, the murderess, the exile, the scorned woman. Among the Roman authors drawn to her story, Ovid stands out in his fascination with her. He devotes half a book of the Metamorphoses to her story, as well as one of his Heroides letters, and a full-length tragedy (which sadly does not survive). We are going to read Ovid’s version of Medea’s story from the Metamorphoses in Latin, as well as other selections about Medea in English.
