Course Description: In this course, we will read from Ovid’s Tristia, a collection of elegies composed during the poet’s famous exile on the desolate shores of the Black Sea. Our readings will include Ovid’s autobiography (IV.10), a somber description of his final night in Rome (I.3), an account of his dangerous journey to the Black Sea (I.2), heartfelt epistles to his wife and stepdaughter (III.3, III.7, IV.3), reflections on growing old in exile (IV.8), and a stark portrait (III.10) of Ovid’s new home: wild Getae, howling winds, mountains of snow, rivers coursing under sheets of ice, and wine served in frozen chunks!
