Pliny: Letters to Trajan

Pliny: Letters to Trajan

Course Description: In this course, we will read selected letters from Pliny the Younger’s correspondence with the Roman emperor Trajan (r. 98-117 C.E.). Our focus will be the letters dating from Pliny’s tenure as governor of Bithynia-Pontus (c. 110-113 C.E.) in northwestern Turkey. These missives—which include many of Trajan’s own replies—cover a wide range of interesting topics including ancient firefighting, Roman engineering & construction, and most famously, Christianity, with Pliny being our earliest known Latin source on the customs and practices of the early Christians.
