Sallust: The Jugurthine War

Sallust: The Jugurthine War

Course Description: This is an advanced reading course of Sallust’s Bellum Jugurthinum, a history of Rome’s brutal war (112-106 BCE) against Jugurtha, usurper of the North African kingdom of Numidia. Our selected text (ch. 5 – 35) will take us through Jugurtha’s bloody path to power up to the final breakout of hostilities between Numidia and the Republic; we’ll read about Jugurtha’s years abroad alongside the legendary Scipio Aemilianus, his violent seizure of the Numidian throne from his stepbrothers, and his corruption of the Eternal City itself, where he proved that everything and everyone was for sale!
