Course Description: While the best-known work of Notker Balbulus (“the Stammerer”) is probably his biography of Charlemagne, no less important is his Liber Hymnorum, a collection of about 50 rhythmic texts that span the seasons and feasts of the liturgical year. These liturgical “sequences,” though probably not the first of their kind, gave great impetus to the spread of the genre during the Middle Ages. In this course we will read and discuss many of Notker’s poems, trying to see them both in the context of the Carolingian era and in the tradition of Christian Latin poetry as a whole, as well as in the tradition of the liturgy.
