Teaching Classics Through Linguistics: A Renewed Grammar-Translation Method

Teaching Classics Through Linguistics: A Renewed Grammar-Translation Method

Event Description

The Paideia Institute is excited to present a free online panel discussion between educators from across the field of Classics on Dr. Stefano Vittori's proposal for a linguistics-based language pedagogy. Challenging the traditional Latin and Ancient Greek curricula and methods of his public Italian liceo classico ("Classical high school"), Dr. Vittori developed an approach to teaching the Classical languages that encourages students to make metalinguistic connections between their primary language, Italian, and the target languages, Latin and Ancient Greek, in order to understand how language works structurally, read confidently without the support of a dictionary, and write their own original compositions.

The event will begin with a presentation from Dr. Vittori outlining the ten key points of his method and the results that he has been able to achieve with his students, followed by contributions from our panelists: Jacquelyn Myers, CPA, former SALVI President, and high school Latin teacher, and Mark Buchan, Classicist, professor of Writing at Rutgers University, and Editor of In Medias Res. The discussion will be moderated by Jason Pedicone, Paideia Institute President.
