The Albigensian Crusade through its Documents

The Albigensian Crusade through its Documents

Course Description: Whether viewed as an attempt to stamp out a pernicious heresy or an attempt radically to destroy the landowning and cultural makeup of the southern part of what is now France by the northern lords of France, the Albigensian Crusade represents one of the most savage and repressive civil wars of the High Middle Ages. This reading course will attempt to understand the history of this critical moment in medieval history through the prism of multiple voices and documents, including papal pronouncements on the war, contemporary chroniclers including Peter of les Vaux-de-Cernay and William of Puylaurens, and the Cathars themselves.
