The Greek Anthology

The Greek Anthology

Course Description: The Greek Anthology is a collection of short poems from classical Greece through the Byzantine period. First compiled by Meleager of Gadara in the 1st century BC, it was expanded and revised by successive generations. It makes a great introduction to Greek poetry for the beginning student, but even experienced readers will discover a treasury of meditations on life and death in the ancient world. It contains memorials for fallen soldiers in the Persian Wars as well as family pets, the ecstasy and agony of lovers, the joys of stargazing and drinking parties, descriptions of lost art, the tensions between pagans and Christians, and other captivating details about daily life throughout the Mediterranean, including marginalized figures such as women, children, and slaves. Each week we will read these poems in Greek, translate them, and discuss interesting points of vocabulary, grammar, and art.
