Course Description: The Homeric Hymn to Demeter is part of a collection of archaic hymns to the gods, which narrate various mythological stories. The hymn to Demeter tells the story of Demeter’s grief and struggle to find her daughter, Persephone, who had been abducted by Hades, and it celebrates the richness of Demeter’s blessings for humanity upon their reunion. 

DETAILS

Level: This class is intended for students with upper-intermediate to advanced knowledge of Attic / Byzantine Greek. Students may differ as regards their respective levels of proficiency; yet in class everyone is supposed to read and translate in turn. Sight reading is not required, home preparation is essential.

Textbook:Students should have an intermediate to advanced reading level in ancient Greek.

Emily Jusino

Emily Jusino holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Classics from the University of Chicago. She has been a professor at Duke University and the University of Rochester, where she taught courses in Greek, Latin, and literature in translation. Several years ago, she left academia and earned her PMP certification. She currently works for a major non-profit in Washington, DC.
