The Letters of Pliny

The Letters of Pliny

Course Description: Pliny the Younger, through his letters, provides a fascinating portrait of the upper political and social life of the Roman Empire at the close of the first-century A.D. The letters are perhaps best known for providing a detailed eyewitness account of the 79 A.D eruption of Mount Vesuvius—indeed, all eruptions similar to Vesuvius are still called 'Plinian' by geologists—and Pliny's remarks on the early Christians. We will read those letters and so much more, for Pliny wrote about everything, from ghosts, leisure, literature, and lawcourts to slavery, gardening, dinner parties, and even matchmaking.
