Course Description: This course offers an engaging reading of the Poetic Edda, a medieval Icelandic collection of mythological and heroic poems that preserves some of the oldest surviving Norse myths. A crash-course refresher in Old Norse language will be offered depending on student interest. The rest of the course will be spent reading through the texts in both the original Old Norse and various English translations.

Instructor

Chihiro Tsukamoto

Chihiro received a B.A. in Political Science from Columbia University, an M.A. in Medieval Icelandic Studies from the University of Iceland, and a Ph.D. in Medieval Studies from Yale University. For her master's thesis, Chihiro reconstructed Viking Age music by using Old Norse, Greek, Latin, Arabic, and archaeological materials. For her Ph.D., she researched 2000+ years of music therapy around the Mediterranean from Antiquity to the end of the Ottoman Empire. She is a translator, simultaneous interpreter, and passionate linguaphile who has studied 20+ languages. A professional pianist, percussionist, and lever harpist, she was a therapeutic harpist at Yale-New Haven Health’s Cancer Hospital. For her research, she has played the lyre at various ancient temples and theaters around Greece, including those in Delphi, Epidauros, Delos, and Eleusis. She currently works in diplomacy.
