Thucydides: Pericles and Plague

Thucydides: Pericles and Plague

Course Description: In Thucydides’ narrative of the Peloponnesian War, two of the most famous moments occur back-to-back, Pericles’ Funeral Oration and the Plague. In the Funeral Oration, Pericles honors those who have died in the war and offers a powerful tribute to democracy, freedom, and the sacrifices made by the Athenians. This speech is immediately followed by the story of the Plague, which juxtaposes Pericles’ idealistic speech with the suffering and social upheaval caused by the Plague as it ravages Athens. We will read these passages in Greek and discuss them in the context of Thucydides’ broader literary style.
