Women Poets of Greece

Women Poets of Greece

Course Description: In the first century, Antipater of Thessalonica wrote a poem describing the nine canonical women poets of Greece. Everyone knows Sappho, but less well known are Telesilla, Myrtis, Praxilla, Erinna, Anyte, Moero, Nossis, and Corinna. This course is designed to survey the surviving poems and fragments of these great writers. Each week we will read select poems closely and carefully in Greek, as well as ancient testimony about their lives and modern essays about their work. Students will learn how to appreciate Greek poetry, understand aspects of its evolution from the Archaic period to the Hellenistic period, and think about the process and problems of the fragmentary transmission of ancient literature into the modern world.
