Yann Martel and the Odyssey of Odysseys

Yann Martel and the Odyssey of Odysseys

Course Description: Yann Martel, most well known as the author of the award-winning and bestselling novel, Life of Pi, has recently published a new novel inspired by Homer's Iliad, Son of Nobody. In this course, we will engage in a close reading of Yann Martel’s Son of Nobody, and as classicists, we will not only compare the text to the original, but also compare it to different texts throughout time adapted, inspired, or parodying both the Iliad and Odyssey. Some tertiary texts we will analyze include but are not limited to James Joyce’s Ulysses, Jean-Luc Godard’s Contempt, and Christopher Nolan's new epic.
