Course Description: Tacitus (ca. 55–ca. 120), one of the most important ancient historians, produced two great historical works, the Annales and the Histories, both of which survive only in part. The former originally covered the principate of the Julio-Claudian emperors following Augustus’ death, while the latter dealt with the rise and fall of the Flavian dynasty. In this course, students will read and discuss selected passages from the Annales. In addition to the cultural and historical aspects, special attention will be paid to the acquisition of new vocabulary.
